This is surely the ultimate lesson to us to respect Covid-19? Sir Tom was a character who brought a sense of new life to the British public with the remarkable result of raising over £32 million for charity by the simple act of walking around his garden. For his efforts he was rewarded with a knighthood – one which was truly really deserved. Everything about him was honourable. I am not going to labour the point as there will be many others more distinguished than I who will be giving tributes. But after nine months of keeping him safe during this pandemic, he went on holiday to the Caribbean, courtesy of free tickets donated by British Airways and the timing points to the fact that going away on the trip looks like being responsible for catching Covid-19. Will we learn from this sad tragedy? Requiescat in pace.
