Will it go up or down next? The statistics over covid still tend to be confusing and contradictory. Today’s latest return shows a drop in numbers from 37622 yesterday to 29547 today. Although on the face of it this shows a reduction, the seven day figure shows an increase to 259849, 5.9%. In reality the seven day figure has been higher during the past week and was at one point over 270000, so it must be a slight reduction. Deaths however show a seven day figure of 983 and that is an increase of 25.2% with 6831 new patients admitted over seven days showing an overall increase of just 3.6% and total UK deaths now exceed 134000. Once again matters hover but it cannot be denied that the rate of new cases remains high and the interactive map tantalisingly changes backwards and forward between deep blue and purple! We now await news as to whether booster jabs will start soon; indeed the whole question of future vaccination seems to be up in the air at the moment. All we can do is to recommend caution. In the meanwhile we proffer a rather remarkable view of an Italian mountain as our photo of the day.
