People are not paying attention. The facts and figures are there for all to see. Sorry to say “I told you so”

Yesterday we said that we were surprised quarantining incomers from France had not come into force. I guess that the Transport Secretary read our blog!

Today those who have been caught out by this change in the rules seem to be complaining left right and centre but do they really have any right to complain? This has been coming and very clearly so for a considerable time. Those who decided to go to France were taking a significant risk and if they have been unfortunate enough to get caught out, sadly they only have themselves to blame.

French junior minister for European Affairs, Clément Beaune, has said “we regret this British decision which will lead to a reciprocal measure in France…”. In other words quarantine will operate the other way as well by way of “tit for tat” but this is of course a typical European Union attitude of trying to punish the British for having the temerity to want to leave the EU. It is rather akin to the French wanting more money from the British so that they can use more French naval boats to accompany illegal migrants from France to Britain.

Today we hear stories of British Airways increasing the cost of a flight from Paris to London from £66 to £452 and Channel Tunnel fees up 30% and similar reports of ferry operators. I suppose as they too have had a bad time of it they will all be looking for every opportunity to obtain additional revenue and this is going to be the price which people will have to pay if they get caught out.

As we have been at pains to point out, the writing has been on the wall and the figures are available for all to see on a public website. For those who have missed it, here it is again:

In our view, everyone needs every bit of help they can get. On 7th July we advised you of a table which has been devised by an American university source setting out the various activities which people can undertake in their order of risk. That table is again appended to this article as it is more important now than it was then. At the bottom of the list, i.e. the safest activity, is opening the post. At the top is going to the pub. Risk is very clearly set out for all to see. Look below for “documents to download” – “Covid-19 risk assessment chart”.

Covid-19 is going to be around for a very long time. I am afraid people have got to get used to that idea and if we want our ordinary lives to resume in any recognisable form, we have to accept that we must all take a cautious view of all activities we want to undertake.
