NHS worker convicted of theft of dead patient’s credit card – where is the trust now?

Trust wears pretty thin when you are robbed in hospital, possibly even after you are dead

This post will not be long but hopefully long enough to make you think about trust in the NHS.

This is not about whether you trust the NHS to make you better but when you go into hospital you are placing your very life into the hands of the hospital staff. Nothing less than the most exemplary of behaviour is required on their part, not just in the conduct of their medical duties, but also in relation to their honesty in relation to care and attention to patients.

The incident which has sparked this blog is a simple one where Ayesha Basharat, a 23 year old healthcare assistant in a Birmingham hospital, used a patient’s credit card to purchase crisps, fizzy drinks and sweets from a vending machine at Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham – and this just seventeen minutes after the 83 year old patient had died.

Ms Basharat was given a suspended jail term at Birmingham Crown Court after being convicted of theft and fraud by false representation.

Really? Is this enough? Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Presumably the lady has now walked away. One can only begin to imagine the circumstances in which the credit card came to be in Ms Basharat’s possession – at a time when the patient was in a position of care in a hospital which one would expect to trust. What on earth is happening to our justice system?

I leave you to reach your own conclusions.
