One sometimes wonders what the British love hate relationship with fish is all about and perhaps with problems with France and COP26 considering sustainability etc, now may be a good time to look at this again. It is not the first time because the matter came up during the pandemic when it seemed quite difficult to be able to buy fish. A number of supermarkets closed their fish counters and indeed not all of them have reopened since. For a country surrounded by sea, fish seems to be really rather expensive. Of all the foods we could eat, it surely ought to be the most abundant and yet because of issues with Brexit, fishermen have had huge financial issues because of not being able to sell their catches. And yet here we have a big dispute over the French claiming that we have not issued enough licences to allow their fishermen to fish in British waters. It’s all gone mad, hasn’t it? If you want to eat oysters in the UK, largely speaking they will cost you a lot more than if you want to buy them in France. What is worse, and speaking as someone who likes oysters, the quality of oysters sold in the UK by the time they reach the selling point is abysmal. So often if you buy half a dozen oysters, when you come around to eat them one is dead, sometimes more. And it is in fact very easy to tell if you eat them regularly, because it all comes down to how much liquid there is in the shell, the more there is, the healthier your oyster will be. And yet there is plenty of good value fish caught off our shores. In Cornwall probably the largest single variety in the catch at the moment is megrim. Meg who, you say? Yes, it is a fish that is scarcely known and yet some say it is as nice as a Dover sole and just a third of the price. Ironically this fish was featured on Countryfile at the weekend and now it is all sold out so this shows the power of television and perhaps the potential public demand for fish. Another reason to go for fish is the now fairly constant suggestions that we reduce our consumption of meat for environmental reasons. Well, it is a point of view! But certainly, one way of preparing your fish is to fry it gently on a hot plate at the table, perhaps in a combination of butter and olive oil with the accompaniment of creamed potatoes, peas, capers and parsley.
